OK, well, I don't think

OK, well, I don't think anyone was going to solve that puzzle. Who would think of those things? Well, not me anyway.

Regarding the before and after video: I'm a little puzzled. Please don't get me wrong; I truly believe all those old videos need updating with modern technology but, on my 30" Dell UltraSharp monitors, I'm really not seeing much, if any, difference in the before and after. Is it possible the same video was accidentally used for both? That said, I am old, so maybe it's just my eyes :) And, whatever the case, the video looks great. What a trip down memory lane.

Oh, and it goes without saying at this point, but I'm going to say it anyway: fantastic work guys. There aren't enough superlatives to express what a great job you're doing.

Dude, it might be your eyes or your monitor cheeky

Of course Mat V.R. can not work wonders, cause we have to deal with the highly compressed version of it. The original source is unfortunately not available anymore, but i think it's sharper and most of the artifacts which you can see clearly in the movie are gone.

Here's a screen comparison:

Thanks. That does help. The differences are more subtle that I was expecting, but I can see that one image has more contrast, and therefor it also looks sharper. And, like you said, it could be my eyes. I am old now, so they're not what they used to be, that's for sure.

Sure, we would love to have

Sure, we would love to have 1080p remastered videos, but what can you do if the source footage is not the best?! The original source for Overseer was such in a bad shape and unusable, so we have to deal with the dvd-version. We'll get something nearly 720p. That's something we didn't know at the beginning.

UAKM and PD, are older games, but the source, as far as i understand, is available. So remastering them, would have a bigger improvement. Also the backgrounds could be changed, for Overseer it would be a LOT of work, frame by frame.

Thanks for the update.

I knew the puzzle was Hex but attaching that to a hex file in the programming of the Tex game is a bit of a stretch since you would have to  actively be modding the game to even know that.  But having a solvable puzzle might not have been the intention in the first place.  Perhaps it's a clue the the complexity of the coming puzzles in the game.  That or they like making people wonder.

Unfortunately I wasn't

Unfortunately I wasn't available to contribute to the last issue so perhaps I can shine some further light on the 'puzzle'.

In a way, it was never meant to be a solvable puzzle. The objective was to highlight the amount of work that had to go into trying to translate the original Overseer binary files in order to migrate that information over to Unity, and in this case, that meant reverse engineering the Overseer scripts from the original data files (I used Hex Workshop) into some form of readable English and therefore give some sort of glimpse into the amount of work that has been done behind the scenes in the beginning as well as the work that you see in the screenshots and videos in the production diary.

By doing this, it actually made the workload a lot easier, as it gave myself and the rest of the team access to all the logic for branching dialogue, the hint system, the travel unlock system, the game logic, etc. I guess the moral of the story is that 3-4 months of hard work up front can actually lighten the load a lot for later on, and because of this, we have access to most of the original game logic which means that on a basic level we have an excellent template of Overseer to build Poisoned Pawn from.

Hopefully that clears things up a little bit. The next puzzle, if we ever do one again, won't be nearly as devious :)

No worries!  Trust me when I say that I was in no way disgruntled that the puzzle was not meant to be solved.  I do appreciate all the work that goes into this game and know that this is no small project.  I truly enjoy your updates each month and appreciate the inside look into the making of the remake.  Keep up the great work!!

I should make one thing

I should make one thing clear: I am NOT disappointed with the video; not at all. The reason I had the idea that there would be a greater difference is I have this image in my head of a video with horizontal lines running across it. I don't even recall which game that video is from; it could well be it's not from Overseer at all. In any case, that was the comparison I was envisioning: a small, grainy image with lines running across it versus what Matt has produced. That comparison difference would have been gigantic. Bottom line: the video looks great and Matt is doing a wonderful job, as usual ;) Indeed, the whole team is doing a great job. That a group of Tex fans from around the world have gotten together virtually to work on this remake is some sort of modern miracle IMHO.

Yeah, that's it. I don't recall that I ever played the DVD version, on account of not having a DVD player at the time smiley

And just look at the comparison! OMG, compared to that what Matt has produced is unbelievable. I know, I know, he didn't use the CD version files, but you can see where my head was at when I first heard he was reworking the videos.

That brings back memories!

That brings back memories! That interlacing was horrible! It made everything so dark and dull. I actually turned it off. The non interlaced version may be blockier because every line is doubled, but it was so much nicer to look at.

Yeah, it was pretty bad. Thankfully, since Overseer did come out on DVD, you guys have better raw material to work with.

Awesome update as usual guys!  One question on scoring... you said it'd be more movement based vs time, how will that work?

That vidphone is awesome

That vidphone is awesome :)

It's a shame the Overseer source video didn't survive (Mat did WONDERS with the Pandora source on Tesla, not sure how long it took him to do it though), regardless, the end result is much better and sharper looking than the DVD original - so thumbs up on that.

As usual, thanks for yet another great update and let us know if we can help in any way :)

Moves-based scoring would

Moves-based scoring would mean that earning the bonus points requires the puzzle be solved within a certain number of moves/actions. Many puzzles in Pandora used this system (cop lock, claymore mine, Witt's puzzle box). Some puzzles in Overseer could have done something similar. The Anasazi gears for instance (solve within X lever pulls).

The project is awesome, and a

The project is awesome, and a lot better that what I was hoping for. I can't wait to play the remake ! Thank you so much for the hard work and the updates.

I hope The Pandora Directive will follow next.

Two small questions if you have time : I've read on Aaron website that he is writing « Tex Murphy and The Poisoned Pawn » starting the story with Count st germaine interviewing tex about the events of Overseer. Any chance you would shoot a small sequence with Tex as an opening (and maybe as an ending), if Chris Jones is willing to ? (for the funds for a mini shoot, you could ask fans, I'm sure would be ok to give some money to help).

I also wonder, you said that they lost the tapes from overseer, but there were bloopers from overseer in the bloopers reward given to backers (like slade after his shower). Any chance they still have some archives you could share ? [If they still had the tape with the russian girl who was cut because of her accent, you could have replaced her and keep Tex for a new scene... but I'm dreaming... Thank you very much!Well,

Thank you very much!

Well, i can not answer all questions to your satisfaction i guess, for obvious reasons wink

I hope The Pandora Directive will follow next.

We've talked about this. Of course it's way to early to announce anything a this point, but if "The Poisoned Pawn" is going well, the chance is high for the next one. If it's UAKM or PD we'll see, or hopefully a new one.

I've read on Aaron website that he is writing « Tex Murphy and The Poisoned Pawn »...

Ehh, no... next question. devil

I also wonder, you said that they lost the tapes from overseer, but there were bloopers from overseer ...

They are available, but the tapes from Overseer are in such a bad condition that we can't use the original footage as the source. So we have to deal with the highly compressed DVD version. The remastered trailer, Mat V.R. did, was from the original source and useable, but unfortunately not mostly the rest of the game footage. We might get better results for UAKM and PD, the source seems to be in a better condition. So i guess the footage from the bloppers from Overseer were on another tape or they used only the good ones, but good point, i will investigate this.

I love typos, especially some of them. Saying you're going to translate TMO into "spainish" made me think: that actually is a more logical spelling than the 'Spanish' that's considered correct. I mean, if the country is Spain, why isn't the language called Spain-ish? smiley

Wow can't wait for this

Wow can't wait for this remake within a remake looks great. Also Aaron's novel of the same name is also recounting the first case, but the framing story is after Tesla. Maybe new footage could be filmed with Tex and St Germain to tie in with the novel make this game more official.

Very nice!  've bookmarked

Very nice!  I've bookmarked the page linked and will dive into it this evening since I'm currently up to my eyebrows in kid related stuff.   Ever been to a grade school variety show?  Me neither.  I went to one rehearsal and it was utter chaos.  Mostly, alot of kids with their fingers up their noses.

So, I will NEEED to look at this afterwards to attempt to erase the the previous 6 hours of my life I will never get back.

Kids and I watched the little video posted.  They both can't wait for me to play it with them when it's finished.  :)

That was one of the biggest

That was one of the biggest concerns and discussions at the begriming in our team. Some of our members weren't sure about expanding the game, cause how would we deal with the fact we will not have any new voiceover?! - I always believed, if we'll proof that we are able to do this game and convince them, there might be a chance. So we build the new locations with an uncertainty. Fortunately, we were right, after BFG saw some none public stuff of the game, Chris Jones confirmed that 'Tex Murphy' will lend us his voice.

Hmmmm.  Think my comment above came out a bit wrong, chandler.  Now that I reread it, it CAN be construed in a couple of ways.  To be honest, I didn't mean it dirty, more like Larry, Curly, and Moe.

Also,  I've been craving quality chocolate lately....  okay, lame excuse but true.
